Rudy B. Andeweg († 2024)
Rudy Andeweg has had a profound impact on Political Science, the University of Leiden, and SPIL. Not only was he a professor for many years, he was also dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences from 1996 to 1998. He advised many politicians and wrote one of the most important books for Leiden students of PolSci: Governance and Politics of the Netherlands together with Tom Louwerse and Irwin Galen. He was the one to personally finance the ‘pennings’ worn by the SPIL board, and was inducted into the Order of Orange-Nassau as Officer in 2018 when he left Leiden University.
Dick Kaphorst († 2000)
From 1985 until 1992, Dick Kaphorst was the deputy administrator of the Faculty of Social Sciences, in charge of HR, finances, and spatial management. Mr Kaphorst unexpectedly passed away on the 21st of November 2000 after 23 years of service to the University of Leiden.
Prof. dr. Hans Daalder († 2016)
Hans Daalder was a professor at Leiden University in the field of Political Science from 1963 to 1993. He is well known for his work on Political Oppositions in Western Democracies together with Robert Dahl – a university professor at Yale. In 1987 in his capacity as head of the department of Political Science, he lead the merger between Gapende Hoogten, LePSA, and DEBAT; leading to the creation of SPIL. Hans Daalder passed away on the 4th of May 2016 at the age of 88 years old.
Prof. dr. Joop Th. J. van den Berg
Joop van den Berg is a famous researcher for the PvdA’s thinktank, the Wiardi Beckman Stichting (WBS). Aside from his work at the WBS, he was also a professor at Leiden University from 1989 until 2006 in the field of Dutch politics and parliamentary history. He also served as a member of the First Chamber of the States-General (the Dutch Senate) from 1992 until 1996 and spent a short time as the leader of the Senate faction of the PvdA.
Prof. dr. Arend Lijphart
Arend Lijphart is a household name in the field of Political Science. Best known for his works on the Dutch consociational democracy, consensus politics, and specialising in comparative politics – Arend Lijphart has been important for Leiden University and the University of California. His literature is still being taught in our current programme.
